Ortho Tri-Cyclen Medical Information
What is Ortho Tri-Cyclen?
Ortho Tri-Cyclen is a prescription oral contraceptive indicated for use by females of reproductive capacity to prevent pregnancy. It is a highly effective, low-hormone birth control pill used by millions of women for reliable birth control and predictable monthly periods. Ortho Tri-Cyclen combines a blend of female hormones, norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol that prevent ovulation.
It also brings about changes in your uterine lining and cervical mucus. This makes if difficult sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.
Some of the inactive ingredients contained in Ortho Tri-Cyclen include; lactose, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, carnauba wax, croscarmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide and purified water.
Ortho Tri-Cyclen is also indicated for the treatment of moderate acne vulgaris in females aged 15 years and above, who have no known contraindications to oral contraceptive therapy and have attained menarche. However, Ortho Tri-Cyclen should be used to treat acne only if the patient is in need of an oral contraceptive for birth control.
Ortho Tri-Cyclen Medical Uses
Ortho Tri-Cyclen is used to prevent pregnancy. However, your chances of preventing pregnancy depend on how well you follow the directions for administration. Thus, the better you follow the usage directions, the less the chance of becoming pregnant.
- Birth Control
Ortho Tri-Cyclen contains two hormones; a progestin and an estrogen. The two hormones prevent pregnancy in varying ways. Firstly, they prevent the release of an egg, also known as ovulation. They also change the cervical mucus, making it hard for an egg to meet the sperm for fertilization.
The third way these hormones prevent pregnancy is by changing the lining of the womb. This makes it hard for a fertilized egg to connect to the womb lining. Since an embryo has to attach itself to the womb to receive nutrients and blood, it cannot survive if it doesn’t attach.
Apart from preventing pregnancy, Ortho Tri-Cyclen also helps to decrease your risk of ovarian cysts, make your periods more regular and reduce loss of blood as well as painful periods.
Ortho Tri-Cyclen is also used to treat moderate acne vulgaris in females aged 15 years and above, who have no known allergies to oral contraceptive therapy and have had their first periods.
Acne is a common skin condition that causes spots to develop on the skin, mostly on the face, back, neck and chest. These spots can range from whiteheads and surface blackheads, which are mostly inflamed and pus-filled.
Acne is caused by clogging of the hair follicles by oil from the skin and dead skin cells. With regard to its treatment using Ortho Tri-Cyclen, the timing of initiation of dosing should be in accordance with the guidelines for use of Ortho Tri-Cyclen as an oral contraceptive.
At other times, Ortho Tri-Cyclen may be prescribed for purposes other than those listed in the patient information leaflet.
