What is a Progestin-only pill?
Progestin-only pill, also known as the mini pill is contraceptive pill containing the female sex hormone progestin. The progestin-only pill contains a lower progestin dose compared to the combination oral contraceptive pill.
The progestin-only pill is most often prescribed to women who are breastfeeding, cannot take estrogen, have migraine headaches or need a birth control method that can be stopped anytime. The progestin-only pill can also be used who experience heavy, painful periods, have anemia or sickle cell.

The progestin-only pill is available in a monthly pack and has to be taken on a daily basis. The progestin-only pill works by increasing the thickness of the cervical mucus to prevent the sperm from reaching the egg. The progestin-only pill may also thin the lining of the endometrium (uterus) to prevent a fertilized egg from attaching itself to the womb. The progestin-only pill can as well suppress ovulation.
The best time to start using the progestin-only pill is on the first day of your period. Because of its formulation, the progestin-only pill is an easily revisable method of contraception. Your fertility may return to normal immediately after you stop taking the progestin-only pill.
