Natazia Medical Information
What is Natazia?
Natazia is a medicine used to prevent pregnancy. In other words, the medicine is an oral contraceptive agent, one which must be taken in the medium-to-long term to prevent pregnancy. Natazia may also be used alongside other contraceptive forms such as condoms – to prevent absolutely the risk of pregnancy (in the case of a missed dose, for example).
Natazia has two active ingredients, dienogest and estradiol, each of which works by different yet complementary means. For example, both drugs prevent ovulation, the process whereby an egg is released from the ovary. The medicine also works by altering cervical mucus and uterine thickness, making it more difficult for implantation to occur.
Natazia is associated with its own range of potential side effects. Among these include light vaginal bleeding, weight gain, breast pain and tenderness, nausea, and vomiting. Patients may also experience more severe side effects such as sudden numbness or weakness, liver problems, symptoms of depression, migraine headaches, and blood clots
Natazia is also associated with numerous drug interactions. These include anti-epileptic medicines (such as phenytoin and carbamazepine), anti-retroviral medicines, rifampicin, and tranexamic acid.
Natazia Medical Uses
Natazia is a medicine used to prevent pregnancy. It is, in other words, an oral contraceptive agent, taken by the patient over the period of 1 month to prevent ovulation. The medicine is used because it contains two active ingredients which work together, though by different means, to prevent ovulation and implantation.
Natazia may also be used for other purposes such as heavy menstrual bleeding, though this is a minority use. Natazia is principally indicated and used to prevent pregnant. The medicine is used because it contains two active ingredients, dienogest and estradiol, each of which works to prevent ovulation.
Ovulation is the process whereby an egg is released from an ovary. With no egg to traverse the fallopian tube, there can be no fusion between sperm and egg and, as a consequence, no implantation of the egg into the uterus. Natazia also works by other means. For example, it alters the uterine lining to make it more difficult for implantation to occur.
The medicine also alters cervical mucus, an important part in the shunting of sperm eggs into the uterus. Natazia, therefore, works by three means: to prevent ovulation, to alter the uterine lining, and to change cervical mucus consistency.
Natazia may also be used for purposes not listed in this guide, at the discretion of the prescriber. This may be the case, for example, where the active ingredient is used off-label in the treatment of other ailments. If this is the case, use of the medicine will be discussed with the patient prior to use.
The dose the patient is prescribed depends upon a number of factors. For example, the patient’s age, current health status, and whether or not the patient is taking any other medicines will all be taken into consideration. Based on these factors, the healthcare provider will determine the optimum dose for the patient.
Dosage is important for Natazia, not least because it is a hormonal contraceptive. Patients are advised to administer the drug as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. As this is a contraceptive medicine, patients are cautioned to adhere strictly with the timing schedule for each dose.
Patients are typically advised to administer the medicine according to the following dosage scheme:
- Adults: The medicine comes with a blister pack, detailing on what day the next pill should be taken. Patients are typically advised to take the first pill on the first day of their period.
Patients who miss a dose during days 1 to 17 (and days 25 to 28) should take the missed dose as soon as they remember. Failing to do so increases the risk of becoming pregnant. Patients who miss a dose during days 18 to 24 should start using a new blister pack from their next dose – beginning with day 1 of the new blister pack.
Natazia Side Effects
Natazia is associated with its own range of potential side effects, many – though not all of which can be found below. The medicine is, however, very well-tolerated. Patients may also experience side effects as a consequence of other, ancillary factors such as the patient’s age, current health status, and whether they’re taking any other medicines.
Patients prescribed Natazia may experience discomfort during treatment. However, this is typically transitory and self-limiting. These side effects include stomach pain and fatigue, and are not – in most cases – a cause of concern. These symptoms usually resolve with time. Patients experiencing severe side effects should always discontinue use of the medicine.
Common side effects with Natazia include:
- Light vaginal bleeding
- Weight gain
- Breast pain
- Breast tenderness
Some patients may experience more serious side effects with Natazia, such as:
- Sudden numbness or weakness
- Liver problems
- Pelvic pain
- Breast lump
- Symptoms of depression
- Increased pattern of migraine headaches
- Blood clots
- Chest pain
Patients who experience any serious side effects should discontinue the medicine and consult with their healthcare provider. Patients should disclose with their doctor whether they’re taking any other medicines, as drug interactions may increase the likelihood of experiencing any given side effect.
For example, Natazia interacts with drugs such as phenobarbital, anti-epileptic medicines, and TB medicines.
Natazia is also associated with its own range of potential drug interactions many of which can be found in the list below. Patients are warned, however, that this is not an exhaustive list of drug interactions. Patients should inform their doctor of any medicine they’re currently taking – including herbal remedies and supplements – as they, too, can also interact with the function of Natazia. The herbal remedy – St. John’s Wort – for example, interacts with Natazia.
However, patients should not be concerned about all potential drug interactions. Some drug interactions have a wholly beneficial effect for the patient, and are frequently prescribed for this purpose. You will also be informed by your prescriber if the medicine is used for any off-label purpose.
Drugs which interact with Natazia include:
- Tranexamic acid
These drug interactions are important. Many drugs increase or decrease the risk of side effects, and this is no less true with Natazia. However, drug interactions can increase the risk of pregnancy with this medicine – as they reduce the effectiveness of the active ingredient. Patients are also advised not to consume alcohol while taking Natazia.
If you are concerned about any potential drug interaction, consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
